Abstract
888,621. Sealing packages. CHRISTENSSON, O. V. Nov. 23, 1959 [March 10, 1959], No. 39646/59. Class 94(1). Apparatus for closing packages under vacuum comprises a turntable 10 having a series of chambers 12 each containing heat sealing means and capable of being evacuated prior to sealing of packages within them. Each chamber is closed by a door 26 pivoted at 27 to an arm 28 which is raised and lowered by cam operated rack means 30, 39. Packages 35 comprising a carton and lining, the latter being closed ready for sealing at 77, are fed by a conveyer 50 between arms 55 on a feed wheel 51. Each chamber contains a pair of arms 57 pivoted on a block 60 which is slidable by cam means 61-65 to project or withdraw the arms. The arms 57 advance and grip a package held by the arms 55 to draw it into the chamber. The door 26 is closed and held in position during evacuation by a fixed strip 16. A shaft 81 mounted in each chamber is rotated to bring fixed and moveable heat sealing blocks 78, 79 together to complete the package closure, Finally the door is opened and the arms 57 eject the package between holders (not detailed) on a discharge wheel 23.
