Apparatus for packaging rectangular articles 4, Fig. 1, in boxes B having lids L, has the boxes fed down a shoot 12 and moved by pusher 25 into pockets in an intermittently movable turret 10, the articles being pushed into the boxes at station 9 either from conveyer 8 or auxiliary magazine 17 should the supply from the conveyer be interrupted; the lids L are fed by shoot 14 to station 13, one flange F1 of the lid skirt, Fig. 4, being slid over the box opening whereby the lid is at an angle to the box and then the lid is rotated to slide over the remainder of the open end of the box. The pockets on turret 10 comprise guides 19, 20, Fig. 7, and a stop 26 with fixed covers 21 at stations 9, 11. At station 10 two or more spots of adhesive are put inside the mouth of box B. by reciprocable arms 88. At station 9, the article 4, e.g. a wrapped batch of cigarettes, is pushed through a mouthpiece 28A which moves with the article, into box B carrying with it some of the adhesive to stick the wrapping of the article to the box. As the mouthpiece is withdrawn the box is gripped between a movable member 21A and cover 21. At position 13 the lid is applied; the lids are moved automatically into a stack and drop into a carrier 29, Figs. 7, 9, fixed to lever 38 and pivoted to bellcrank 30, 32. Rotation of cams 34, 36 initially causes the carrier to be swung to the shown position by bellcrank 30, 32, the stack of lids being supported by plate 57 and a gate, not shown; then lever 38 rotates the carrier about pivot 35 to slide the lid on to the box. A member 39 actuated via levers from cams moves with the lid to distend it for easier fitment, the member 39 being withdrawn as the lid is moved on to the box. Apertures 27, Fig. 7, in the turret allow a rising platform 85 to move the closed box upwards at the next station for movement on to a conveyer 15. The lid is subsequently secured to the box by, for example, a thin strip which can act as a tear strip for a further wrapper.
