1491591 Packaging machines H J LANGEN & SONS Ltd 2 Jan 1975 [17 Jan 1974] 143/75 Heading B8C A packaging machine includes a loading station A (Figs. 1, 5) for loading an article 70 into each of a plurality of compartments 50 as these move continuously on a conveyer 10. Wiper blades 96, 98 attached to a conveyer 84 move the article 70 along a loading platform and deposit it into a compartment. The compartments 50 are formed at the end of troughs 34 by plates 48. The troughs are moved laterally, their path 28 (Fig. 1) being determined by guide rails 22, 23 (Fig. 5). The plates 48 are also moved laterally by guide rails 23, 24 and normally follow the path 32. Thus the compartments 50 are moved through a wrapping station B where a carton blank 120 (Fig. 10) is stripped from a stack by suction caps 188, partially folded about a former 150 and fed into the path of each compartment containing an article 70, the presence of which latter is detected by an electric eye unit 64. The blank is wrapped around the compartment 50 by fixed guides 222, 224 and by moving blades 228, 240 (Fig. 13). If sensing device 62 detects the absence of a wrapper, plate 48 is constrained to follow path 30 and the unwrapped article is retained in the compartment 50. The presence of a wrapper ensures that plate 48 follows the path 32 and the wrapped article is ejected on to the discharge conveyer. End flaps 136, 140, 144, 145 are closed by moving guides 264 and fixed guides 270, 274, 276 (Fig. 15). Flaps at the other end are closed by a similar mechanism 265 (Fig. 1).
