Abstract

1,040,821. Packaging. PACKAGING CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Jan. 13, 1965 [Feb. 28, 1964], No. 1513/65. Headings B8C and B8P. [Also in Division B2] A package, particularly for books, is formed by enclosing the book &c. in a band and inserting or wrapping it in a carton or wrapper of dimensions to give clearance on all sides, the band being then secured to the interior of the soformed container to locate and suspend the book. The band may be secured by having on it external glue spots against which the outer container is pressed. The containers may have weakening lines to control distortion at the corners due to mishandling. Apparatus for banding and cartoning or wrapping is largely convention. It may be adjustable for different package sizes. In one embodiment, Figs. 3, 5, the book B with applied band 12 is inserted in a carton and secured to the side walls a, b<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>2</SP> by pressing the walls against glue spots 14. The book is thus suspended clear of the side and end walls. A tear-out portion 6 having central gripping portions assists opening. Weakening lines 10, 11 determine the direction of distortion in the event of dropping &c. In another embodiment, Fig. 15, the tear-out portion is provided in a broad glue lap e to produce a flap f which may, after removal and replacement of the book, be tucked under the carton wall b to reclose the package. In a further embodiment (Figs. 27-32, not shown) the narrow wall adjacent the glue lap has end flaps shaped to permit ready opening out of the wall when the tear-out portion in the lap is removed. The openended wrapper (Figs. 17-26, not shown) is of tubular form with edges reinforced by glueddown infolded extensions with a tear-out portion and crush weakening lines the lap being secured by glue or tongue-and-slot connections. The package may be overwrapped, an aperture permitting grasping of a tab of the tear-out portion (Fig. 32, not shown). Apparatus for forming the packages is generally conventional. The books are banded by being removed from a support above a conveyer by dogs on the latter to fall on to the band already sited on the conveyer. The band passes over a glue wheel with the book and is ploughed round the latter and secured by pressure applied by belts (Fig. 33, not shown). It then passes between intaglio rollers for application of the glue spots. These may be as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,787,244 (Fig. 34, not shown) (see also Division B2). If the open-ended wrapper is to be applied, the wrappers C, Fig. 36, are fed from a magazine 56 partially folded and unfolded to U form by means, not shown, for conveyance by dogs 58 to beneath a book support 59. The dogs slide the book on to the wrapper, one side of the latter is ploughed over and glue applied by a nozzle 62 and the other side ploughed down. Rollers 62 and belts 64 secure the lap and the band-wrapper glue connections. If the book is to be cartoned, this is done by known means (not described) and the packages with ends open placed on vertically reciprocating supports 46, Fig. 35, above a conveyer 47. The supports lower them on to presser bars 49 on the conveyer which carries them past rotating book centring elements 51, end flap outfolding devices (not described) end flap glue applicators 52, and infolding means (not described) to end pressure applying belts 53 and top pressure plates 49<SP>1</SP>
