UNITED STATES P. GALLIS'IEL, OF CHICAGO,
CLARENCE IPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO MID-WEST BOX. CO]!!!- A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
SHIPPING BOX FOR ARTICLES.
A Application filed June 17,
The invention relates to shipping cases for articles, such as books.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved shipping case for books or similar articles, which is dapted to-be formed of a single sheet of corrugated board, and in which provision is made for effectively cushioning the ends of the books, or articles.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by the claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawing: Fig. 1 is a plan of the shi ping case before the flaps have been folded around the book or article. Fig. 2
is a erspective showing the cushion forming aps in operative position and the other flaps open. Fig. 3 is a transverse section, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal section.
The invention is exemplified in a blank? which is formed of a single piece of doublefaced corrugated board, and is com osed of a member 5 which is adapted to orm the bottom or one side of the case and to enclose one side of a book; side flaps which comprise members 6 adapted to protect and enclose the front and back of the book, and
as shown in Flg. 3, to completely cover said other side of the book; and end flaps, each of which comprises a member 8 adapted to form an outer end wall, a member!) adapted to extend inwardly under one of members 7 of the side flaps, a member 10 adapted to be folded into parallel relation with the member 8, and an end member 11 ada ted to extend outwardly to abut against tiie member 8. Longitudinal creases 12 and 13 are formed between the members 6 and 5 and 7, so that the side flaps will readily fold on the proper lines. The blank is also creased transversely at 14, 15 and 16, to cause the members of the end flaps to be readily foldable into the positions described.
In shipping books andthe like, it is important that the top and bottom thereof should be properly cushioned and protected against possible injury, and by providing end flaps, which are foldable, as illustrated and disposed to form box-like formations,
1925. Serial No. 37,617.
of the book receives Usually the corrugaside flaps, When the the top and bottom efi'ective protection. tions extend longitudinally of the and transversely of the end flaps.
end flaps are folded into this box-like forma tion, the top and bottom of the book will be spaced inwardly from the outer wall members 8 and thus held against possible injury in shipment. The end of member-11 abuts against the inner face of the member 8, so that each member 10 will be properly spaced from the member 8 and protected, notwith standing any possible dama eto said member 8. When the side flaps are olded'into closed position, as shown in Fi 3, a sealing strip 17 will be applied to%1old them closed. Members 7, when closed, will overlie the members 9 of the hollow end rotectors, so that no special means for hol ing the pro tectors in operative position will be necessar The invention exem lifies a corrugated board'shippin case which is formed of a single sheet, w ich can be produced at a low cost, and which, when closed, will serve to effectively protect the book against damage in shipment.
The invention is no-t to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the a pended claims, without departing from t e spirit and scope of the invention.
While the invention has been described as adapted for the shipment of books, it is to be understood that it may be used for other articles, for which it is adapted.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: v
1. A shipping case for a book or similar article consisting of a single sheet of paper board and comprising a rectangular member adapted to enclose one side of the book, a pair of fla s connected to the side margins of the mem er and adapted to be secured and folded together to enclose the front and back and the other side of the book, and a pair of flaps connected to the bottom and top margins of said member and adapted space the side forming portions apart and be folded to enclose and form hollow engagement-cushions for the top and bottom of said book, each of said last mentioned flaps being provided with portions adapted to be folded to form inner and outer walls, a connecting wall between the inner and outer walls and adapted to underlie the side form ing portions of said first mentioned flaps, and a spacing wall between said inner and outer walls, the flaps being creased so that their several portions will fold correctly into operative position.
2JA shipping case for a book or similar article consisting of a single sheet of corrugated board and Comprising a rectangular member adapted to enclose one side of the book, a pair of flaps connected to the side margins of the member and adapted to be secured and folded together to enclose the front and back and the other side of the book, and a pair of flaps connected to the bottom and top margins of said member and adapted to space the side forming portions apart and be folded to enclose and form hollow engagement-cushions for the top and bottom of said book, each of said last mentioned flaps being provided with portions adapted to be folded to form inner and outer walls, a connecting wall between the inner and outer walls and adapted to underlie the side forming portions of said first mentioned flaps, and a spacing wall between said inner and outer walls, the flaps being creased so that their several portions will fold correctly into operative position, the corrugations of the board extending transversely to the creases in the said last mentioned flaps.
