Open-topped tray cartons 3 filled e.g. with biscuits are at least partially inverted about an axis parallel with the open face by a gripper 9, 12 during transfer to a pusher plate 28 which moves them past wrapper-folding elements 39 so that the seam of the wrapper comes over the open top. The filled cardboard &c. trays 3 are fed by a belt and pusher, with their open tops upward, on to an angle member 9 rotatably mounted on a shaft 7. A two-armed lever 11 fixed to the shaft 7 carries a holder 12 which forms with the angle member 9 a gripper for the filled tray. The angle member 9 and the shaft 7 are rotated by racks and pinions so that the holder 12 is first depressed to engage the contents of the tray. The angle member 9 and lever 11 then rotate together in the direction of the arrow C through 180 degrees so that the tray is deposited inverted on to a pusher plate 28 with an aperture 32 through which passes the holder 12. A slight relative movement between the angle member 9 and the holder 12 then releases the tray and the angle member is then moved back to its starting position the lever 11 remaining in the position shown in Fig. 4 so that its arm 13 forms a guide for the tray. The pusher plate 28 then moves upwardly until the inverted carton contacts with an upper pusher plate 29 which has a wrapper sheet 38 positioned below it. The lever 11 is then returned to the starting position with the gripper formed between the angle member 9 and the holder 12 open to receive a further carton. The inverted carton is meanwhile moved upwardly by the plates 28, 29 into a folding box 39 and folding elements (not shown) fold the wrapper 38 around the carton and slide it on to a plate 40. A cardboard strip may be interposed between the contents and the holder 12.
