Referring to Figs. 24 and B5, the wrappers 1S are supported upon a table carried by a plunger 156, to which a lifting tendency is imparted by a weight 47 suspended from cords 48 passing over pulleys 49, one of which is shown in dotted lines at Fig. 2l. the cords being attached to an arm on the lower cud of the plunger 46. 50 is a brake piroted at 51 to the sleei'e through which the plunger 46 slides, and has a downwardly extending arm 52 carrying a tappet 53 which` when acted upon, releases the brake. The brake so acts that when applied. which is the nor- Inal condition, it permits the table i5 to slowly rise, and the pile of wrappers are normally held up against corner pieces 5l of the box, `Fig. Q5.
Carried in suitable bearings of the framework is a vertical shaft 55, Fig. l, capable oi' vertical but not of rotary motion, and which is vertically moved at proper times by a lever 56 operated by a cam on the shaft 34, and at its upper end the shaft carries a plunger Q3. The shaft 55 passes through a sleeve 57, Fig. 1, which latter has fixed on its upper end a disk Q1 which is to receive step-by-step rotation, and which also is to be raised and lowered, and this disk carries three sets of downwardly depending feet Q0, and three pairs of end tuckers 2Q which nre fixed to the said disk. The sleeve 57 is raised and lowered at proper times by a lever 58, Fig. 1, pivoted :it 35 and operated by a cem on shaft 15?., and the sleeve 57 is litted with a pinion 5.) engaging a toothed wheel 60, see Fig. QG, the face of which is of sufficient width to permit of the vertical niotion of the sleeve o7 without the teeth of the pinion 59 becoming disengaged from the teeth of the spur wheel (30.
The spur wheel f5() is carried by a shaft (Sl rcvolul'ile in bearings in the framework and passing through the horizontal table thereof. adjacent to the upper surface or' which the shaft 61 if fitted with ratchet mechanism 62 operated by a connecting rod G3 by l means of a level` 64, see Fig. Q, receiving motion from a cam on the shaft 34. A .spring retained pivoted arm 65, Fig. 26, is provided, having a tooth 66 taking irito one or other of three notches in a disk (S7 carried hy the sleeve 57, in order to define the positions of the sleeve 5T and* consequently of the disk 21.
0n the main table of the framework and extending beneath the disk 21 is a box, carrying rollers G8, Figs. 2 and 3, for supplying` adhesive to the ends of the feet 20, the rollers being driven by means of belts, as shown at Fig. 2, from a pulley 0.1 the shaft It will be observed from Fig. 3 that when one set of'feet 20 with the tucking fingers 22, are located over the pile of outer wrappers 18, another set of feet and pair of tucking lingers carried by the disk will be opposite the carriage 10.
The operation of taking an outer wrapper from the pile is as follows During the step-by-step rotation of the disk 21, the ends of the feet 20 pass over the roller 68, Fig. 2, and receive a supply of adhesive, and upon those feet arriving above the pile of wrappers, the disk 21 is lowered by the lever 58,
Fig. l, and the feet press upon the uppermost wrapper and depress the pile of wrappers against the action of the Weight 47, Fig. 24. During the descent of the feet of the disk 21, the lever 58,l Figs. 1 and 24, oontacts With the tappet 53, Fig. 24, and rn0- mentarily releases the brake 50. and immediately the pile of wrappers receive an upv ward impulse by the action of the weight, and the brake again becomes applied, so insuring the uppermost wrapper firmly adher ing to the feet 20, and then the disk 21 is raised carrying the wrapper with it, While the pile of wrappers from which it is taken rise more slowly, so that the uppermost wrapper, seized by the feet, is flicked past the corner pieces 54, Fig. 25. and carried away from the pile. The disk 21 then receives a partial rotation. bringing the Wrapper opposite to the carriage 10 and holding it in a horizontal position. the plunger 2?, being in a. raised position.
The tablet carried by the carriage 10, and so far inelosed in the inner wrapper as has been described with reference to Fig. 8, is then advanced forward, the corners F, Fig. 8, of the wrapper being thus acted upon by the tucking fingers 22 of the disk 21 and so folded on to the folded side C of the inner wrapper into the position as shown at Fig. il, and the tablet so wrapped in the inner wrapper is now to be subjected to the mechanism by which the folding of the inner wrapper is completed. and by which the folding of .the outer wrapper thereon is carried out.
and Ibis mechanism will now be described. Opposed to the upper plunger 23 is a lower plunger 24. Fig. 2, capable of vertical sliding motions through an aperli're in a table 26, see als-'i Fig. 31, and op( through the medium of a link of) erinnerung the plunger with a lever 70, rit-reiving inotion from a cam on the shaft 33,
Upon the table 2G is located folding mech` anism, which is shown detached andupOn a. larger scale at F' 2T. 28 and 2h, by means of which the folding of the inner wrapper is completed and the folding of the outer u rapper around the already inclosed tablet effected, and which will now be referred to.
I a lateral continuation of the table 2li l there is a trough-like structure. comprising spring-held sides 7l. Fig` and :i lease. and having a lid the enlarged end o1" which 72 terminates immediately before the lower plunger 24, and upon the 'table 26 on the opposite side of the plunger 24 there are guides 73 containing certain sliding mein` bers now to be referred to. (lne of such members consists of a recii'irocaing sfide in a position so that its` lower surface can slide over the top of a tablet when the tablet restsupon the plunger 2i in the position shown at Fig. 27, and which we will term a to slide.
etween the guides 73 is a horizontal pusher 27 bifurcated at its 'forward end, as shown at Fig. 2S, so to pass` on each side of the plunger 24 when the latter in a raised position, and there is further carried outer horizontal tucking fingers ii Fig. 28, one upon each side of the pusher 2T, the tuoking fingers being connected together at their rear.
The reciprocating slide 25, the pusher 27 and the tucking fingers 31 are each operated at proper times by links and connecting rods 74, and 76 through the medium of rock levers, such as 77, Fig. l, operated by cams on the shaft 33.
Downwardly moving tncking fingers Si? are provided at each side of the coier end 72. these being operatei'l` as shown at Fig.
30. by means of a link "LQ and lever TU op@ eratod by a cam on the shaft 33. {cai-ward of the tuckmg fingers 30 there are two blocks 32, the lower surfaces of which stand at a short distance from the face of the table 2G. as shown at Fig. 2T.
Rearward of the blocks 32 the sides of the trough extend downwardly and present a lovfer inclined edge. as :it- Fll. Fr, there being .i slight clearance space la ici-el: the edges of the base of the trough and the vertical inner faces of the platesy learwfrd of the plates ell. the the tioieh have horiz/,outil inwardly e'. l tending wings 8l at the bale mit. :is
at Fifi'. 29,. and then the continuation ol' the l trough consists of the oasil Si. the spring I held sides 71 and the top cover.
The operation of this mechanism for com ileting the folding of thepinnerl wrapper and for"dealingwith the second .wrapper slid, as :before stated, toward the left hand frein the position'atFigs 1 and- 2, now carries the tablet partly wrapped in the inner wrapper in the-condition shown atv Fig.- 9, and Aso holds thfesaidtablet immediately above theeuter wrapperH', which latter is held by the .adhesive on to the` feet 20, and the tablet is" also in position immediately beneath the plunger 23.3 The lower plunger Q4 then rises to beneath the wrapper and tablet, and the upper plunger 23 comes down on to the top of the tablet, and then both plungers descend and 'carry the tablet' and the wrapper beneath it, into the position shown by dotted vlines at Fig. 2T.; thus causing the sides H1, H2 of the outerl wrapper to be turned upward on to the sides of the tablet, as shownat Fig. 10,'
simultaneously folding up the outstanding flaps J, Fig. 9, of the inner wrapper. The rear upstanding side H2 of the outer wrapper is then folded over into the position shown at Fig. 11 by the forward advance of the reciprocating slide 25, and the tablet.
and wrapper are then pushed by the bifurcatcd pusher 27 (Fig. 28) beneath the end 72 of the trough, thus folding down the forward upstanding side H1 of thewrapper into the position shown at Fig. 12. The tucking fingers 30 (Figs. 28 and 30) then descend and tuck vin the end portions 4H (Fig. 13) during which lthe lower plunger 24E rises" to receive another tablet. the rise of the tucking fingers 30, the horizontally sliding tuckingiingers 31 advance and tuckin the rearward corners K of the wrapper, as at Fig. 14, and then retire.
Another tablet having been brought by the plunger 24- into the dotted position at Fig. 27, then upon this second tablet being advanced b y the pusher 27, the first tablet dealt with is forced between the blocks 32,
so tucking in the forwardcorners L (Fig. l5) and the extending flaps M pass beneath the lower surtacesof the blocks 32; and as the tablet advances the extending flaps M are acted upon by the inclines of the side plates 80, and are so turned vertically downward. Upon arriving at the horizontal wedge-sh ed plates 8l, the said down- Wardlly e. tending flaps M are turned be- 1' nea th the package as at Fig, 16, and in due course the tablet thus 'completely wrapped, in an inner and an outer rectangular wrapper, arrives at the delivery end of the trough in a. finished condition.
