.This invention relates to machines having means whereby an articler and a wrapper can be" forced through 'a wrapper folding channel whereby the wrapper is folded upon the article. y y

The invention consistsof means where paste is a-pplied to approximately. allie one sidil of a wrapper, and conveying belts cooperating with a movable guide adapted to more the paste coatedwrapper to restbe-j tween a wrapper folding channel, and the article to be wrapped. l i' i The invention also consists of swinging doors which are located between ther article and the wrapper so that forward movement of the article causes the doors to be swung against the wrapper, whereby the wrapper is moved againstL the wrapperfolding channel previous to the time'the article reaches it. The wrapper folding channel is provided with brushes and rollers adapted lto press the y wrapper against the article during travel of the article and wrapper along said wrapper folding channel, whereby -the paste coated w 1apper is forced against the article, 'said' paste then serving to hold-the wrapper to the article.
The invention furtherconsists of-wrapper folding mechanismshaving yielding arms carrying rollers which are adapted to fold and press certain portions of the ypaste coated wrapper against the article. A swinging folder .is provided having two laterally swinging folders pivoted thereto, said laterally swinging folders being lactuated by.
' two reciprocating slides. These folders serve to fold the paste coated wrapper against the article, and also to partially fold certain unfolded paste lcoated portions of the wrapper. Pivoted to each of said reciprocating slides' are two swinging folders, which vFig-1.

during forward movement of the slides, take against stationary inclined surfaces which cause the folders to be swung against said partial folds of the wrapper, causing said partial folds to be forced against stationary parts of the machine, whereby the paste coat- 60 ed portions of said folds are forced together. During return movement of said reciprocating slides, a part thereof takes against and moves auxiliary slides having inclined surfaces which further press and crease said folds of the wrapper. Secured to shaft 16 isa gear wheel 29 'which drives'a series of gear wheels 30, 31 and 32. .Gear wheel 32 is secured. to a shaft 33 having pulleys 34 and 35 secured thereto. Pulleys 34 serve to drive belts 22, and pulleys 35. serve to drive belts 25. From pulleys 34 the belts 22`travel downward parallel 'to belts 20, over idle pulleys 36 and around pulleys 37, thence up over idle pulleys 38 back to pulleys 34. From pulleys 35 the belts 25 travel downwardv 'parallel to belts 21, over idle pulleys 39 and around pulleys 40, thence up over idle pulleys 41 back to pulleys 35.
Secured to shaft 33 is a gear wheel 42 which drives gear wheels 43 and 44. Gear wheel 44 is secured to a shaft 45 which is journaledin swinging arms 46. Secured to shaft 45 is a series of narrow wheels 47. By means of springs 48 connected to arms 46, the wheels 47 are lightly pressed toward the under side of roller 17. Upward movement of rollers is checked by means of an adjust able stop 49.

Secured to one end of the shaft 16 to which roller 17 is secured, is a crank arm50 which is connected by a link 51to a sliding carriage 52. The sliding ,carriage 52 actuates a paper feed mechanism 53 adapted during every revolution of shaft 16 to feed a' wrapper from a pile 54. As the paper feed mechanism forms no part of this invention further description thereof is not considered necessary.
Secured to vertical shaft 5 is a cam 55 adapted for engagement with aA roller 56 journaled on a crank arm 5 7 which is secured to a rock-shaft' 58.` To rock-shaft 58 is secured an arm 59 which is connected by' a link 60 to a plate 61 having vertical reciprocating movements on guides 62. The
guides 62 are'arranged to cause said movements of plate 61 to be across the entrance to a wrapper folding channel having an upperplate 63 and lower plate 64. To link 60'is secureda shaft 65 upon which are journaled theidle pulleys 39 over which the endless belts 25 travel.
The. cam 55 is shaped to cause movement of plate 61 upward to the position shown in Fig. 17, at the time the paper feedmechanism 53 has caused a wrapper/54 to bemoved forward between the paste coated surface 18 of roller 17, and the series of Wheels 47. Said upward movement of plate 61 is ac- -companied by upward movement of the idle .ment between the traveling belts 20, 22 and 21, 25, the paste coated surface 18 of roller 17 at the same time applying paste to approximately all of one side ofthe wrapper.
.Thetraveling belts then carry the paste coated Wrapper downward, until a portion ofit passes the plate 61, at which time the plate and the rollers 39 will move down- Ward, and as the plate 61 serves during this downward travel to hold the wrapper against downwardly moving portions of belts 20 and 21, the plate coperating with the belts acts to move the wrapper downward as long as the downward movement of the plate continues. At the end of downward-movement of the plate, the wra; per is brought to rest upon a support 66, tk plate then serving to hold said wrapper across the entrance to said channel, as shown in Fig. 12.
Secured to shaft 2 is a cam 67 adapted for 'engagement with a roller 68 journaled on an arm of a bell crank lever 69 which is pivoted at 70 to the main frame. The other arm of lever 69 is connected to a cross-bar 71 havof articles 74 may be placed. The cam 67 is shaped to cause up and down movements of the articles 74 in vertical guides 75. An article in the lowered position as shown by :dotted lines in Fig. 12 is in' range with' 'said wrapper .folding channel, and rests coated side ofr said wrapper. Between said article and the lwrapper is a pair of pivoted doors 77, one of said doorsiextending ver. tically downward and the 'other extending vertically upward-.said doors adapted to swing toward the upper andlower sides of the wrapper folding channel. Springs 78 serve to normally swing said doors to the vertical position. i
Secured to driving shaft 2 is a bevel gear wheel 79 in mesh with a bevel gear wheel 80 which is secured to one end of a shaft ,81."3'To the other end of shaft 81 is secured an arm 82 having at its free end a crank pin 83 upon. .which is journaleda roller 84. The roller- 81rides in aslot 85 .formed in a lever 86 whichvis .pivoted at 87 to the lmain frame. Thefree end of lever 86 is connected by links 88 to a plunger 89 having.reciprocating movements in guides reciprocating movements of ,plunger 89 yre caused by rotation of shaft 81 carrying the arm 82 crank pin 83 and roller 8J; traveling in the slot 85 formed in lever 86. v
Forward movement of plunger 89 causes the articleshown"by dotted lines in Fig. 12 to be 4moved forward to the position shown in Fi g. 16, during which movement the plate 61 will have moved upward. and said for-` ward movement of the article will have caused said doors 77 to swingto the position shown in Fig. 1G., Said swinging movement of the doors 77 cause them to take against the paste coated wrapper, and to hold it against the upper and lower sides of the wrapper folding channel at the time the upwardly moving plate G1 moves away from said channel. Then, as the article is moved forward by the plunger 89 the forward side of the article takes against the paste coated side of the wrapper, and the wrapper a dhering to the article is forced between said upper and lower plates, thereby causing the paste coated side of said wrapper to be folded against the upper and lower sides of the article.
,A portion 91 of the upperplate 63 of wrapper folding cliannel is made vertically movable and pressed downward bymeans of springs 92, thereby rendering easy the ent ance of said wrapper and article into said wrapperfolding channel. Mounted on each of said upper and lower platesA is a brush 93 extending into said channel suilicient to exert 'a slight pressure` on the portions of the wrapper folded against the'uppei and` lower sides of the article. '.The brushing action caused by forward movement of the ar. ticle and wrapper serves to make intimate contact of the paste coated side of the wrapper with the article. During said forward movement of the article and wrapper, the portions a of the wrapper projecting beyond the. sides of the article ta'keagainst pro'- 'jcctions 94- cxtending into said channel from the two sides thereof, thereby causing 'the paste coated sides of said portions u to be folded lagainst the ,sides ofthea'rticle as shown in Fig. .The height of said in. wardly extending sideI projections 9i is suincicnt to make only partial folds of the pastr-l coated sides ofthe triangular flaps b toward the paste coated sides of the flaps 'c extend in gbeyond the upper and lower sides of the article. Duringfurther forward movement of said article `and wrapper, said partial folds of triangular aps l take against upper and lower inclined surfaces 95 formed on inwardly extending side projections 96 which extend nearer to said upper and lower plates than do the inwardly vextending proiections 9-1, thereby causing said partial folds to be pressed against said upper and lower plates, whereby the paste coated sides of said triangular viiaps l) are forced against the paste coated sides of the fiaps c.l During further forward movement of the article and wrapper, the portions a folded against the sides of the article take against rollers 97, the circumference of which travels nearer to said article than the projections 9-l extend, whereby the paste coated sides of said portionsy a are firmly pressed aga-inst the article. Rollers 97 are journaled in projections 98 extending inward from the sides of the wrapper folding channel, each of said projections having upper and lower inclined surfaces 99, and having a recess 100 between the upper and lower sides thereof, for purposes hereinafter described.
Secured to vertical shaft 5 is a cam 101 adapted for engagement with a roller. 102 journaled on a crank arm 103 which is. secured to rock-shaft 104'.. To rock-shaft 101 is secured an arm 105 which is connected by a link 106 to a plungcr107 having vertically rcciprocating movements on guide rods 108. under side of the plunger 107 and acting on link 10G,y arm 105, rock-shaft 1.04 and arm 103, serve to keep roller 102 in engagement with cam 101. Journaled in bearings on plunger 107is a rock-shaft 110 having a downwardly extending arm 111 secured to each end thereof. Collars 112 are secured to the rock-shaft 110, and to each of said collars, one end of aeoiled spring 113 is connected. The springs are coiled around shaft 110 and the ends of the springs brought into engagement with the. plunger 1.07, whereby said springs cause swinging movement of the arms 11,1 toward a stop 114. Journaled f in the lower ends of arms 111 is aroller 115 having a ratchet wheel 1.16 secured thereto. A. spring pressed pawl 117 pivoted on an arm 111 and engaging said ratchetwheel, permits' rotation of `the roller in one direction and prevents it in the other direction.
Springs 109 pressing against the "110 Downward movement of plunger 107 causes roller 115 to take against the upper wrapper flap d overhanging the rear of the article, shown in Fig. 3, causing .said flap to be turned downward, said springs 113 causing the roller 115 toA press the paste coated side of the flap against the rear of the article, as shown in Figs. 6 and 17.
.Secured to shaft 2 is a cam 118 adapted for engagement with a roller 119 journaled on one arm of a bell-crank lever 120 which is pivoted at 121l to 'the main frame. The other arm of the lever 120 is provided with a slot 122 in which a pin 123 travels. Pin 123 is mounted on a plunger 124 having vertically reciprocating movements on guide rods 125."` Forming part of plunger 124 are extensions 126 having slots 127 in which pins 128 travel. Pins 128 are secured to swinging arms 129 vwhich are pivoted at 130 to the main frame. Secured to the -free ends of swinging arms 129 is an upwardly extending plate 131 having a laterally swinging plate 132 pivoted to each end thereof.
The two plates 132 are connected by a spring 133 which vnormally maintains said plates in alinement with said upwardly extending plate 131.
Upward movement of plunger 124 causes upward movement of the swinging arms 129 carrying the upwardly extending plate 131, causing said upwardly extending plate to .take against the lower wrapper liap d extending beyond the rear ofthe article, as shown in Fig. 6, thereby causing said flap to be turned upward, the pivot of said swinging arms being arranged to cause said upwardly extending plate to press the paste coated side of said flap against the rear of the article and against the folded upper llap d, as'shownin Fjigs. 7 and 12.' y
When the upwardly extending plate'131 has reached itsuppermost position the laterally swinging plates 132 pivoted to the ends thereof/will be in range with side Aflaps e forming part of the folded rear flaps d, and also in range with projections 134 extending inward from slides 135A having reciprocating movements on dovetail guides 136 formed in the sides of said wrapper folding'chan'nel. Pivoted to each of the reciprocating slides 135 are upper and lower swinging arms 137 which arenormally held against the extensions 1,34 by -means of springs 138.
One end of a link 139 is pivoted to each of the reciprocating slides 135, and the other end of each of said links is provided with a slot 140 in which a pin 141 travels. The pins 141 form part of arms 142 which are secured to a rock-shaft 143. Secured to rock-shaft 143 is an arm 144 which is connected to a bar 145 having a slot 146 through which the shaft 81 passes. Journaled on a.4
pin 147 forming part of bar 145 is a roller 148 which travels in a cam groove 149 formed on a cam 150 which is secured to shaft 81. By means of the described intermediate connections the` cam 1 50 causes reciprocating movements of slides 135. F orward movement of slides 135 cause the extensions 134 thereof to take against the pivoted plates 132, causing said plates to swing and thereby to`fold the flaps e toward the sides of the article, the pivots of said plates arranged to cause the'paste coated side of said flaps to be pressed againstsaid article, as shown in Figs. 13 and 14. The height of thepivoted plates 132 is suliicient to makeonly partial folds of the pastevceated sides of the triangular flaps 7 toward the paste coated sides of the aps cextending beyond the upper and lower sides of the article. The slides 135 during further forward `movement thereof take against an auxiliary slide 151, andimove said auxiliary slide from the position shown in Fig. 15 to the position shown in Fig. 14. The inclined sur `faces 95 previously referred to are formed permit said movement of the slides 135.
Said forward movement-of the slides 135 also cause said upper and lower arms 137 pivoted thereto to take against the upper and lower inclined surfaces 99 on the projections 98, causing said arms to swing and thereby to force said partial folds of the triangular flaps f against the paste coated sides of the flaps c; the pivots of said arms arranged to cause said partial folds to be pressed against said upper and lower plates of the wrapper folding channel.
Return movement of the slides 135 permits return movement of the arms 137 pivoted thereto, and also permits return movements of the laterally swinging plates 132. Secured to each slide 135 is a 'rod 153 having a collar 154 secured thereto, so that as the slides 135 continue their return movement, said collars 154 take against the auxiliary slides 151, causing the auxiliary slides to be moved from the position shown in Fig. 14 to the position shown in Fig.. 15. The auxiliary slides are provided with flanges 155 which take against the standards 9 and thereby limit the return movement of said auxiliary slides. During said return movement of the auxiliary slides the inclined surfaces 95 on the upper and lower extensions 96 thereof take against said folds 'of the triangular' flaps f, thereby forcing said folds tightly against said upper and lower plates,

In range with the upper unfolded wrap* per llaps of the preceding article are rollers y .15G which are journaled ,in swinging arms 157 mounted on the vertically reciprocating plunger 107 in amanner similar to that in vwhich the swinging arms 111 carrying the i rollerv 115 are mounted. Downward movement of'plunger 107 causes therollers 156 to take against the upper unfoldedwrapper flaps of the preceding article, `causing said flaps to be turned downward, action of the springs'll causing the rollers 156 to press the paste coated sides 'of the liaps against the sides o f the partially wrapped article, as shown in Fig. 17.

A. wrapping machine comprising a wrapper folding channel, a support for a wrapper and a support for an. article; means whereby paste can be applied to approximately all of one side of a wrapper, and means for moving said paste coated wrapper to rest on said support in such a manner that ideama lower unfolded paste coated iaps extend! ing beyond the rear of the article; in combination with upper and lower movable folders, said upper and lower unfolded flaps being in range with said folders; means for actuating said folders whereby said pastefcoated flaps are folded, said folders arranged to swing toward the rear of said article, whereby said paste coated fiaps are pressed against the rear ofv said article, substantially as described.
