Be it known that I, CHARLFS 'S. BA DORF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Tucking and Wraping Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to article wrapping machines such, for example, as the type of coin handling machines illustrated in my Patent No. 998,834, of July 25, 1911. In machines of this type, the articles to be wrapped are assembled upon a suitable stacking mechanism and the stack is then conveyed by suitable carrier or gripperarms to and in engagement with a series of wrapping rolls, by which a suitable wra per which is interposed across the path 0 the stack in its travel from the stacking means to the wrapping means, is smoothly and tightly rolled about said stack to form the desired package. It is to be understood, however, that the invention may be applied to any machine of a similar type adapted to wrap articles of circular outline, whether in the form of coins, disks or otherwise.
The object of the invention is the provision of means which shall insure the snug laying of the paper or wrapper around the article or articles to be wrapped, in order to produce a tightly and neatly rolled package. Incidental to this object, the invention contemplates means to insure the holding of the initial end of the wrapper snugly against the package during the first part of the wrapping operation, in order that said end may be snugly tucked between the stack and the following part of the wrapper.
In the type of machine illustrated in the application above referred to, means are alsoprovided for crimping in the ends of the wrapper against the ends of the article stack, in order to complete the package; The particular form of this mechanism, however, forms the subject matter of my co-pending application Serial No. 554,642,.

In the drawings I have illustrated so much of the coin handling machine of the type referred to as is necessary to a full disclosureof the inventionfin which, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a' machine of the type referred to, showing the wrapping rolls and cooperating parts, the stacking mechanism being removed for clearer illustration Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is' a plan view of one of the wrapper rolls detached, showing the wrapper laying and tucking devices used in conjunction therewith, said parts being shown in stack receiving position. Fig. 4: is a front view of the parts shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional View wrapping rolls.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 indicates a part of the frame of the machine carrying the paper feeding and wrapping mechanism on the upper part of which is mounted a support 2 for the paper roll 3, from which the wrappers are, supplied. The wrapper strip 4 is automatically fed between the feed rolls 5 and 6 Fig. 2 and over a knife or cutter 7 to a position transverse of the path of the stack of articles as the latter are conveyed from the stacking mechanism to the wrapping mechanism as described in my copending application above referred to. In order to position the wrapper strip accurately with reference to the stack to be wrapped, a -lateral guide finger 8 is provided supported by'an arm 9 suitably mounted upon a transverse bar 10 of the machine frame, said arm 9 being adjustable laterally to accommodate different widths of 'wrap per strip. 11 indicates a set screw by which said arm may be held firmly inadjusted position.'
The wrapping mechanism proper comprises a pair of wrapping rolls 12 and 13, which are journaled respectively upon the arms 14 and 15, said arms being relatively adjustable in any suitable manner in order to enable the rolls to operate upon articles adjacent said roll in anysuitable manner as by providing the same with hooks 13 engaging a shaft 13 extending transversely of the frame 13", upon which the arms 14- 15 of said feed rolls are mounted. This guide bar 13 serves to conduct the upper run of the wrapper strip as it leaves the knife 7 and to deliver the same smoothly to said upper roll 13. Coiiperating with the wrapping rolls 12 and 13 is a third roll 16, Fig. 1, which is journaled in the upper ends of the arm 17 and 18 of a rocking or oscillating frame 19 fixed to a shaft 20 mounted in the lower part. of the frame 1, the shaft 20 being provided with a cam arm 21 hav ing a cam roll 22 adapted to engage the rotary cam 23 carried by a shaft 24 which is operatively connected with the power shaft of the machine. By this construction it will be seen that the third or forward wrapping roll 16 will be caused to move periodically into and/out of operative position with re spect to the wrapping rolls 12 and-13. As described in my co-pending application, the movement of the third or forward roll 16 to such operative position takes place just after the stack of articles to be wrapped. has been conveyed from the stacking device substantially into operative position in engagement with the wrapping rolls 12 and 13 by means of the stack carrier or gripping arms.
These carrier or gripping arms may be constructed and operated in substantially the same manner as illustrated in my patent above referred to. For complete illustration of this invention, however, these carrier arms are indicated at 16 and are adjustably mounted respectively with the arms 16" of the rocking frame 16. Said frame is suitably connected with suitable cam mechanism by which the gripper arms and the article or stack of articles carried thereby, may be conveyed from the stacking mechanism to "the wrapping rolls as described in said patent. Mounted upon the shaft 16f, Fig. 3, of the third or forward wrappingroll 16 is a .erably formed integrally with said endwrapper laying and tucking device comprising a frame consisting of the end-plates 2525, connected by the cross plate 26, prefplates. 3 on said blade, whereby said bar ma accommodate itself to the position 0 the wrapper when the same is brought into eng'agement therewith and may contact with the said wrapper throughout its entire width in order to lay the same smoothly and snugly about the stack of articles to be wrapped. Upon the opposite side of, the
frame carrying the tucking blade 35 is held normally in the stack receiving position as. indicated in Fig. 5 by means of the coil spring 37. This manner of yieldingly mounting the paper tucking blade 35 enables said plate to open out from the wrap ping roll 16 in order to accommodate itself to stacks of articles of different diameters which are to be wrapped and at the same time to hold said tucking blade in position to tuck the wrapper snugly against said stack in the manner hereinafter to be described. As the stack A,f Figs. 7 and 8 of articles to be wrapped is carried past or over the feed roll 16 as indicated diagrammatically in 7 by the gripper or stack carrying arms 16, said stack carries the wrap:
per strip 4, which has previously been fed across its path into engagement with the contact bar 30 of the paper laying blade 28. Further movement of the stack A in its travel toward the feed rolls 1213, serves to rotate the paper laying and tuckingframe with the parts carried thereby upon the shaft of the roll 16 until'said frame and parts assume the position indicated diagrammatically'in Fig. 8. During this rotative movement-of said frame, the paper tucking blade 35 carries the extreme end of the wrapper strip 4a'gainst' the, stack A and holds the same snugly upon said stack as indicated in Fig. 8, whereby said end may be smoothly and tightly received between the stack and the following portion of the wrapper strip 4. The fingers 35 lying in the annular slots 16 of the feed roll 16 serve eflectively as guides for the initial end of the paper wrapper strip and prevent the same from beingcaught between the roll 16 and the paper laying and tucking frame. Also the curve of the tucking blade is such that engagement of the stack therewith will cause the outer edge 35 of said.
blade to carry the end of the wrapper strip against the stack and hold the same in such position until such end is received between the stack and the following portion of the wrapper. Also during the rotative movement of the tucking or wra ping frame, the paper laying blade 28 1s moved in wardly by I roll 16, thereby further laying the wrapper strip snugly and smoothly around the stack. It is understood that as soon as a sufficient amount of the wrapper strip has been fed the stack toward the wrapping over the knife 7 to form a Wrapper for the stack, the wrapper feeding operation ceases,
, whereby that portion of the wrapper strip which has already been fed for wrapping purposes is automatically. severed from the balance of the'strip at the starting of the wrapping operation of the wrapping rolls.
As soon as the wrapper is laid. completely 7 about the stack by operation of the wrapping rolls, the ends of said wrapper are crimped in against the ends of said stack by means of the crimping fingers 36 mountedbetween the wrapping rolls 1-2 and 13', Figs. 1 and 2, which are automatically moved inwardly against the endsof the stack by suitable mechanism, the particu-- larform of which forms: no part of the present invention. For the purpose of a clear understanding of this invention, however, it may be said that the crimping fingers 36 are carried upon blocks 37, sli ably mounted upon a bar 38 supported at either end by arms 39, depending from rock arms 40, which are pivoted upon studs 4Lcarried by suitable slides as described in my copending application, 'Ser. 'No. 544,642 above referred to, by which said crimping arms may be adjusted to accommodate themselves to the different diameters of the articles to be wrapped. While I have herein described'a particular embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same maybe varied in 30 detail and relative arrangement of parts, within the scope of the appended claims.

combination with a wrapper supply mechanism of a pluralityof wrapping rolls, one of said rolls being movable into and out of operative position with respect to the others, wrapper laying and tucking mechanism carried by said movable roll and comprising a frame having a member adapted to lay said wrapper snugly about said article or articles and a second member adapted to guide the leading end of said wrap er between said article or articles and the ollowing portion of the wrapper during the wrapping operation, and means for conveying an article or stack of articles to operative pos1t1on between said rolls constructed and arranged to cause said articles to move said laying and tucking mechanism from article receiving position to operative position during the travel of the article or articles to wrapping position.

In an article wrapping machine, the combination with a wrapper supply mechanism of a plurality of wrapping rolls, one of said rolls being constructed and arranged to swing into and out of operative position with respect to the others, wrapper laying and tucking mechanism carried by said swinging roll and comprising a frame rotatably mounted thereon, said frame having a member adapted to lay a said wrapper smoothly about said article or articles and a second member adapted to guide the leading end of said wraplperhetwee'n the said article engage said laying and tucking mechanism or articles and t 0 following portion of said and to rotate the same from article receiving wrapper during the wrapping operation, position into 0 erative osition. and means for conveying an article or stack C LE S.
