Abstract

364,751. Wrapping and labelling machines. SCHWEIZERISCHE INDUSTRIE GES., Neuhausen, Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Nov. 11, 1930, No. 33960. Convention date, Nov. 11, 1929. [Class 94 (i).] Cylindrical bodies or circular or oval biscuits or tablets arranged in piles are enclosed in a wrapper folded at the ends as shown in Fig. 14, and a label is applied to secure the folds. The article 1 is fed into position I above a plunger 2, Fig. 1, and beneath a wrapper 9. A plunger 10 is then in its lower position, and rises in conjunction with the plunger 2 to carry the article to position II, where the sides of a frame 14, Figs. 1 and 3, apply the wrapper to the sides of the article and leave two depending flaps 28, 29. Spring-pressed holders 16 in the frame are now allowed, by their operating levers 19, to approach the ends of the article under the action of springs 18, and a folder 26 raises the flap 28 against the underside. The frame then moves to position III carrying the article and wrapper with it and folding up the flap 29 against the edge 30. The holders 16 are withdrawn from the ends of the article and a forked folder 41 rises and makes folds 42, Fig. 11, in the projecting ends of the wrapper. Folders 44 form folds 43, Fig. 12, and plungers 37, 38 co-operate to carry the packet to position IV, Fig. 1. During the ascent, fixed folders 48, 49 make the folds 46, 47, Fig. 13, or a single folder may be used to make a broad fold. The article is now in a frame 52 on a slide 53, and is conveyed to the right, Fig. 1, by the reciprocation of the slide, past a fixed folder 56, which turns down the flap 57, Fig. 14. The articles are conveyed from the wrapping devices by a conveyer bar 59 actuated to move in a rectangular path. The bar is provided with holders 60, to prevent the articles from rolling or rubbing. The articles are labelled at the ends by the apparatus shown in Fig. 6. Labels are withdrawn from the bottom of a magazine 80 by a pneumatic suction plate 82 pivoted at 84, which presents the edge of the lowermost of the pile to grippers 85. The grippers carry the label into position over a container 86 for adhesive, or for water if the labels are already gummed. Prior to this, a series of fingers 92 have been caused to descend through apertures in the top of the container and to rise to the position shown. They then descend and deposit adhesive on the label, which is next carried by the grippers 85 further to the left and deposited on a pivoted flap 93, unaided by an independent frame 94. One flap and frame turn upwards about their pivot 95 and apply the label to the end folds of the package. The frame 94 is pressed by a spring against the flap 93 so as to yield when contact with the end of the packet is made. The flap may be fitted with a resistance coil so as to dry the adhesive.
