Abstract
1,130,802. Filling containers with powdered material. CARTER ENG. CO. 10 Jan., 1967 [1 April, 1966], No. 1348/67. Heading B8C. [Also in Division F2] After partially filling a container with fine particulate material through a reduction in container internal pressure, the pressure is then reduced again, prior to further filling, at a slow rate in order to avoid particles being sucked into the screens of the gas-withdrawal ports. In the embodiment, a container 4, is evacuated through suction passages 24, in a filling head 2, whilst an inflatable valve 16 is inflated to block off the passage 14 leading from a supply hopper 8 to the container. The valve 16 is then opened and closed one or more times to introduce shots of the material into the container until it is partially filled. The rate of vacuum withdrawal is then reduced in order to avoid the particles being sucked on to vacuum screens 22, and when the vacuum has been increased and remains constant through air leakage, further shots of material are introduced into the container until it is filled. A valve (40), Fig. 4 (not shown) effects the varying rates of vacuum withdrawal. The rate of operation of the valve 40 may be adjusted by a manual throttle valve (78).
