Abstract
1,265,272. Glow discharge lamps. BURROUGHS CORP. 11 March, 1970 [3 April, 1969], No. 11684/70. Heading H1D. In a Nixie tube comprising a stack of cathode electrodes 60 enclosed by a cylindrical anode including a rear plate 110 and a front screen 120, a capsule 200 containing a mercury-bearing substance 201 is secured to the rear plate 110. The latter has at least one projecting finger 170 extending toward the last cathode at the rear of the stack to facilitate the initiation of glow at said cathode. Preferably, a plurality of fingers 170 are provided along the central vertical axis of the plate 110. The fingers may be formed by taps or rods welded to the plate or by tabs punched out of the plate. The plate may be continuously curved or may have flat portions (Figs. 3 to 5, not shown). The capsule 200, comprising a metal ring having a recess containing mercury 201 in a suitable binder, is secured to the plate 110 by tabs 210 welded to the plate or punched from it. In alternative embodiments (Figs. 6 to 9, not shown), an annular capsule is secured in a depression in the anode plate or surrounds a raised portion of the plate. The tube filling includes neon or argon at a pressure of 20 to 80 mm. Hg in addition to the mercury.
