Abstract

1,264,968. Silver halide photographic material colour developing process. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Oct.2, 1969 [Oct.2, 1968], No.48558/69. Heading G2C. A method of developing a photographic material housing a support carrying at least one imagewise exposed silver halide emulsion layer containing a development inhibitor releasing coupler (i.e. a coupler which upon reaction with an oxidized primary aromatic amine colour developing agent forms a dye and releases a compound which inhibits development) comprises treating the layer with a developer solution containing a competing coupler (i.e. a coupler which couples with the oxidized aromatic amine developer to form a coloured or colourless compound which leaves no permanent colour in the processed layer) and an aromatic amine colour developing agent which forms a dye on oxidative coupling with the coupler. The developer solution preferably contains 0À05 to 20g per litre of the competing coupler. Many examples of competing couplers are listed. The developer solution may contain an auxiliary developing agent e.g. 1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidone, 1-phenyl- 4, 4-dimethyl-3-pyrazolidone or an amino phenol developing agent. The developing solution may contain a silver halide solvent e.g. an alkali metal thiocyanate. The DIR coupler may have a monothio group in its coupling position in which case the coupling -off group is a mercaptan which inhibits development and the dye formed by coupling is diffusible. By this process fine line copy is recorded satisfactorily and acceptable continuous tone images may be produced.
