Abstract

777,583. Colour photographic process. BESWICK, G. E., GANGUIN, K. O., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 13, 1955 [July 21, 1954], No. 21231/54. Class 98(2) An exposed multilayer or multi-particle differentially sensitized gelatino-silver halide material containing colour formers is treated with an alkaline solution of formaldehyde and an inorganic sulphite after colour development, treatment which arrests development and hardens the gelatin, thus differentiating from acid solutions of formaldehyde which are not effective as gelatin hardening agents; and having the further advantage that in the presence of the sulphite the formaldehyde does not react with developer amine to form an insoluble aldehyde-anil. The invention is further described with reference to Specifications 698,046 and 723,171 which use a yellow styryl dye-colour former for masking purposes in the magenta layer, and the latter of which uses colour formers in the cyan layer which are phenols and 1 - naphthols unsubstituted in the 4 position to the OH group, whereby unused colour former and an amine as of the developer react with formaldehyde to produce the leuco form of reddish dyestuff and which latter is oxidized to dyestuff in the bleaching bath to constitute a masking image in such cyan layer. The solution for the purpose comprises formaldehyde, sodium sulphite, sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and potassium bromide. Substances such a hypo can be added is desired.
