The core of an electrically heated thermal storage heater is formed of crude iron in pig form. Alloying additives, e.g. aluminium and/or chromium, may be added to the pig iron prior to casting to improve its corrosion resistance and resistance to thermal shocks. One or more electrical heating elements may be directly embedded or cast into each pig, in metal-tometal contact therewith.
