Abstract
1,261,010. Stopping pipes. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. 15 April, 1970 [28 April, 1969], No. 18028/70. Heading F2P. A central rotatable screw 10 in a pipe stopper acts on a sealing member (spring housing 11) to seal pipe 1 by spring pressure adjustable by the screw, and which locks in the pipe by locking pawls 16 pivoted on a threaded ring 13 which engages the screw. The housing 11 contains a spring stack 12 and bears against a shoulder 2 inside the pipe 1 to form a seal. The spring housing 11 and ring 13 are held against rotation by longitudinal pins extending between the spring housing 11 and a retaining plate 6, fixed against rotation by ribs at the pipe end and supporting the head 7 of the screw 10. The inner end 9 of the head 7 is a polygonal prism located in a like shaped bore of the screw 10 for relative axial freedom between the head and screw. Initially, the stopper is placed in the pipe 1 as shown on the left-hand side of Fig. 1, with the ring 13 and the pawls 16 abutting the housing 11 rendering the pawls inoperative. Upon rotation of the screw 10, the ring 13 rises and the pawls are cammed outwardly by the surfaces 10a, 10b, 10c of the screw, to lock in a groove or grooves 4 in the pipe 1. The screw 10 is then depressed upon further rotation, its bottom face pressing the spring stack 12 directly, as shown, or through an intermediate ring with interposed thrust balls for relative rotation.
