Abstract

951,682. Hydraulic accumulators. GREER HYDRAULIC Inc. Sept. 5, 1961 [Dec. 28, 1960], No. 31815/61. Heading F1P. [Also in Division F2] An hydraulic accumulator comprises a cylindrical casing 11 having a cylindrical opening 12 at one end and its other end 13 closed and substantially hemispherical, a piston 31 slidable in the casing, a plug 15 releasably secured in the open end of the casing and having a fluid port 151, and a fluid port 14 in the closed end of the casing. The closed end 13 is integrally formed with the casing by a drawing or forging operation and the open end 12 has a screw thread which receives a sleeve 24 arranged to abut the plug 15. The sleeve is provided with conformations 20 which are for the insertion of a tool when the plug is to be removed and can only be reached to unscrew the sleeve when a locking ring 23 is removed from the end of the plug and the pressure in the accumulator is sufficiently low to permit the plug to be moved away from the sleeve. The plug has a hemispherical recess 42 shaped to conform with the hemispherical end 34 of the piston 31 which has two annular projections 35, 36 provided with seals 37 engaging the wall of the casing, a passage 39 permitting hydraulic fluid to enter the space between the seals to prevent extrusion thereof. A reinforcing ring 30 is provided in the end of the piston which is bevelled at 43 to prevent jamming of the piston when it engages the hemispherical end of the casing.
