Abstract

1,198,490. Pipe couplings. TUNGUM CO. Ltd. 7 Nov., 1968 [9 Nov., 1967], No. 50967/67. Heading F2G. A body 1 having an externally threaded tubular projection 4 has a central bore 2 adapted to receive a pipe 6 as a sliding fit, the end of the projection being counterbored to provide a recess 8 in which an 0-ring 9 is housed with axial clearance, the dimensions of the ring being such as to be an interference fit in the radial sense with respect to the pipe and counterbore when fitted. A pipe-gripping collar 13, longitudinally split, has a wedge surface 12 that co-operates with a complementary wedge surface 10 on a nut 5 screwed on to the projection so that the nut contracts the collar radially, and a thrust washer 16 is positioned between the end of the extension and adjacent end of the collar to close the outer end of the recess. Fluid pressure urges the 0-ring against the washer. The wedge surface 12 of the collar may be relieved by an annular groove 17.
