Abstract
1,191,235. Rotary pipe couplings. FILTON Ltd. 11 March, 1968, No. 11798/68. Heading F2G. In a rotary pipe coupling of the kind which includes a rotary contact seal formed by a floating element 10a, which is loaded by a spring 35 and is axially slidable but non-rotatable, and a collar 9 on the end of a hollow rotatable shaft 1, sealing being effected between radial faces 8, 10 of the collar and floating element, respectively, the collar 9 is formed integrally with the shaft 1 which is passed from the inside of a split casing 2 through a thrust bearing 13 and a set of needle rollers 12, for which it provides the inner race, the free end of the shaft being provided with an annular recess 22 so that a screwed connector 17 can be secured to the shaft externally of the casing by the use of a nut 20 and a split ring or collet 21 having a conical surface 23 which engages a similarly formed aperture in a flange 24 of the nut 20. A pipe (not shown) may then be attached to the connector 17 by means of screw thread 18. The collet 21 is preferably of brass and its surface 23 may be coated or covered with a low friction, e.g. plastics, material. The portion of shaft 1 which provides the inner race for the needle rollers 12 is surface hardened, e.g. the shaft is made of nitralloy and the surface nitrided. The radial face 8 of the collar 9 is hard lapped. The floating element 10a is of softer material, e.g. brass and slides in an aperture in a carrier 5 which is fitted between the two halves 3, 4 of the split casing 2, the whole assembly being secured by bolts 6. Sealing of the element 10a is effected by 0-ring 11 which is prevented from being squeezed into the clearance between element 10a and the carrier 5 by a plastics ring 30, while a further plastics ring 31 retained by circlip 32 retains the seal within a recess 29. A further 0-ring 36 seals a chamber housing the spring 35 and communicating with a port 7 from the interior of the shaft and element 10a. A thrust sleeve 33 is preferably interposed between the spring 35 and element 10a.
