Abstract
1,259,473. Carrier bags. BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd. Dec. 19, 1969 [Dec. 19, 1968], No.60468/68. Heading A4G. A carrier bag of flexible wrapping material, e.g. paper or plastics, is formed from a rectangular sheet with its opposite edges pleated at least twice so that the free edges 1<SP>1</SP>, 2<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3A are directed outwards, the sheet being folded perpendicularly to the pleats to bring the free edges face to face and form front and back bag walls 6, 7 with the fold being the top of the bag. A U-cut-out 8, Fig. 4, is formed through the fold and walls and inlet folds of the pleats to define two opposed loop handles 11, 12, and the bag mouth 13, and the free pleat edges are secured together by adhesive or welding to a point below the bag top at 14, 15 and the bottom edges are secured at 17. The sheet may have multiple or box pleats and the walls joined via an intervening folded panel, e.g. at the bottom. The bag may be formed from flattened tube slit and folded, or continuously manufactured from a web transversely pleated, folded, punched, sealed and cut. The tops of the handles may be spot welded to hold the several plies in position.
