Abstract

1,183,734. Carrier bags. H. J. B. PLASTICS Ltd. 10 July, 1968 [11 July, 1967], No. 31803/67. Heading A4G. A plastics carrier bag has walls 1, 2 of double thickness provided with upper marginal parts 3, 4 of quadruple thickness, said parts 3, 4 having edge-sealed openings 8 providing finger grips or for a suspension loop, and said walls 1, 2 being connected by a fold 5 and welding seams 6. The bags are formed from lay-flat tubing which is passed through a gussetting device (12) to provide gussets along its longitudinal edges, passed through a device (13) containing two pairs of hot cutting and welding knives to form pairs of stamped out and edge sealed openings in the gussets, folded about a central longitudinal line by a folder (15) so that the gussets are together and their opening in register, and then passed through a device (16) containing opposed sealing jaws and a knife to form transverse double welds and cuts therebetween. The lay-flat tubing may be folded about its centre and then gussets formed and provided with edge sealed openings. The starting material may be a flat strip of twice the tubing width which is folded centrally to become flattened, unclosed tubing. Seams 6 may be produced by high frequency or ultrasonic welding. The bags may be trapezoidal shape with seams 6 tapering. Seams 6 may be curved. Each part 3, 4 may contain a single opening 8 which is oblong with rounded ends. Openings 8 may be partially punched out and connected by tear seals.
