Abstract
1,259,427. Fatliquoring leather. HENKEL & CIE. G.m.b.H. Oct. 9, 1970 [Oct. 13, 1969], No.48046/70. Heading C6C. A fatliquoring composition contains an olefin sulphonation product obtained by reaction of an olefin of chain length C 10 to C 30 with a strong sulphonation agent, and neutralization and partial or complete hydrolysis of the product so formed with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, such as sodium or potassium hydroxide, ammonia, or an alkyl- or hydroxyalkyl-amine. The olefin is either unbranched, preferably with 14 to 22 carbon atoms and a terminal double bond, or branched, preferably with 16 to 24 carbon atoms, with an alkyl chain, preferably with 1 to 12 carbon atoms, attached to a carbon atom with double bond. The sulphonation agent, e.g. gaseous or liquid sulphur trioxide or chlorosulphonic acid, may be used with gaseous diluents such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide or sulphur dioxide, or liquid solvents. The fatliquoring composition, which may be bleached if necessary with sodium hypochloride or hydrogen peroxide may be applied to leather, e.g. chrome tanned leather, in the form of aqueous solutions or emulsions and may be admixed with other leather treatment substances such as sulphonated or unsulphonated oils or fats or synthetic fatliquoring substances, e.g. chlorinated paraffins, paraffin sulphonates, mineral oils.
