Abstract

1472735 Metal salts of organosulphonic acids KING INDUSTRIES Inc 8 Jan 1976 [8 Jan 1975] 00661/76 Heading C2C An alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, lead or zinc salt of an organosulphonic acid is obtained by reacting an organosulphonic acid, in free acid form, with at least a 1% molar excess, relative to the sulphonic acid groups therein, of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, lead or zinc carbonate, in the presence of "free" water, continuing the reaction until a carbonate/acid equilibrium is established, and thereafter completing the neutralization of the sulphonie acid groups by adding to the equilibrium mixture a small amount of a strong base which has a base strength greater than that of the bicarbonate ion. Specified organosulphonic acids are dinonyl naphthalene sulphonic acid and disulphonic acid, mono-, di- and poly-dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid, didodecylnaphthalene sulphonic acid, hexane sulphonic acid, hexadecane sulphonic acid, petroleum sulphonic acids and the sulphonic acid of white mineral oil. An inert solvent may be added to the reaction mixture before or after the establishment of the equilibrium. Preferably, a combination of a volatile inert solvent and hydrocarbon oil is used so that after neutralization the water and volatile solvent can be stripped off to leave the sulphonate salt in solution in the hydrocarbon oil.
