Abstract
125,594. Buckingham, J. F. Aug. 29, 1916. Projectiles.-Relates to projectiles of the kind containing an inflammable substance which preferably ignites spontaneously on issuing from one or more lateral outlets during flight. According to this invention, the seal of the outlet is adapted to be broken by the rifling of the gun barrel as the projectile is fired. In the bullet shown in Fig. 1, a long narrow outlet F is provided through which the inflammable composition, such as phosphorus and metal' dust, contained within the bullet A, can pass. The outlet is normally sealed by brittle solder or thin metal, which is broken by the rifling G of the gun barrel as the projectile is fired. The outlet may be sealed by a copper or other metal band, which, in the case of a shell, may be the driving-band.
