Abstract

1,249,294. Suction lifting heads. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 5 Dec., 1968 [5 Sept., 1967; 17 June, 1968], Nos. 40625/67 and 28772/68. Heading B8H. The effective area of a suction lifting head, Fig. 1, for lifting uncured concrete slabs, is controlled by valves 15 which are raised when they come in contact with a slab to connect the lower surface 12 of the head with a vacuum source. Each valve controls a separate chamber such as 11<SP>1</SP>. Fig. 8 shows an alternative valve 420 in which a projecting stem 428 lifts the valve off its seat 424 to connect that part of the head controlled by the valve to the vacuum source. Figs. 9-11 show valves which are normally open to the vacuum source. If the chamber controlled by the valve is not covered by the load atmospheric pressure lifts the valve member and holds it against an 0-ring seal to cut-off the vacuum supply. Fig. 4 shows an embodiment in which a central suction chamber 106 is surrounded by a peripheral chamber 116. These two are interconnected by a valve 136 which may be opened or closed depending on the size of the load. Fig. 6 shows an embodiment in which the lifting area of the head 218 is adjusted by an impermeable mask 226.
