Abstract
1,248,917. Angular bending. H. J. STEEL. 3 Oct., 1968 [12 Oct., 1967], No. 47051/68. Heading B3E. An apparatus for cold bending tubes com prises a grooved forming roller, drive means for rotating said roller, a leading clamp connected to said roller for securing the leading pipe portion said clamp rotating with said roller, a linearly movable trailing clamp for securing the trailing pipe portion and a mechanical linkage other than said drive means connecting said clamps and disposed to maintain the distance between said clamps along the bending path constant to thereby maintain a constant length of the outer bend surface of said tube. The base 1 supports guides 2 for a slidable carriage 3 carrying the trailing clamp 4. The grooved roller 6 provided with a leading clamp 10 is rotated by rack and pinion gearing 13, 14, Fig. 3, driven by hydraulic cylinders 16. A grooved supporting shoe 18 and a grooved pressure die 19 support the pipe walls at the entrance to the roller 6. As the pipe is bent around the roller the distance be- tween the clamps 4 and 10 is kept constant by means of a pair of chains 22 attached to the clamps. If desired the load on the chains may be eased by a compressed air cylinder 25 attached to the carriage 3 and after forming this cylinder is used to retract the carriage. To prevent scoring of the pipe the grooved pressure die is attached to the carriage directly or through toggle mechanism so as to move with the pipe.
