Abstract

1,074,747. Straightening. AMERICAN BRAKE SHOE CO. Aug. 21, 1964 [Nov. 8, 1963], No. 34359/65. Heading B3E. Apparatus for straightening a shaft comprises means for supporting a shaft at spaced points, means for engaging the shaft intermediate the supported portions of the shaft and for deforming the intermediate portion of said shaft, means for coupling to one end of the shaft for rotating the shaft while it is being deformed by said deforming means, and means for moving said deforming means to engage and deform said shaft and for gradually withdrawing the deforming means to lessen the amount of deformation of said shaft while said driving means continues to rotate such shaft. A shaft 12 to be straightened is rotated by a motor 14 while supported on three pairs of rollers 16. An hydraulically-actuated press ram 76 carrying spaced pairs of rollers 55 is lowered to deform the rotating shaft between the pairs of rollers 16. The rollers 55 are then gradually raised, lessening the amount of deformation of the shaft 12, until the shaft has no deformation and is straight. The shaft 12 may be tubular. For non-circular cross-section shafts the rollers 55 could be controlled by cams or programmed controls.
