Abstract

876,284. Drawing-machines. SCHUMAG SCHUMACHER METALLWERKE G.m.b.H. March 4, 1960 [March 9, 1959], No. 7827/60. Class 83 (4). A method of drawing rolled or extruded stock comprises thrusting the leading end of the stock through a die in more than two movements so that a sufficient length of stock passes through the die to enable the drawing to be completed by smoothfaced grippers which apply a pressure per unit area which is too low to damage the surface of the leading end of the drawn material. The apparatus comprises a bed 3 on which slides 2 and 8 counter-reciprocate, they are driven by cams 16 and 17 mounted on a main shaft 15 which is driven bv a motor 11. The stock passes through straightening rolls 19 and 20 to a thrust feed slide 4 which grips the material and forces it through a die 1. The slide 4 is driven by a single-lobe cam 13 which is geared to the shaft 15 so that it makes, say, four forward thrusts while the slide 2 completes one cycle. The slide 2 has long smooth-faced jaws which grip the material to complete the drawing and the slide 8 has shorter smooth-faced jaws. In a modification the slide 4 is driven by a multi-lobe cam so that the gearing between the cam and the main shaft 15 is unnecessary.
