Abstract
1337476 Coiling CLARKE CHAPMANJOHN THOMPSON Ltd 24 May 1972 [11 June 1971] 18570/71 Heading B3E A method of coiling tubing comprises feeding tubing by driven feed means, e.g. rollers 12 and 18, to a coiling roller 30 and applying to the roller 30 a torque or speed which is independent of the torque, speed or force of the driven means. In operation, a pre-bent end of the tubing 10 is placed around the rollers 30 and past a roller 36. Feed rollers 12 are then driven slowly by hydraulic motors 14 and the torque applied to the roller 30 slowly increased. A wedge (76), Fig. 2 (not shown), is adjusted to lift offsetting roller 40 so that its flange 42 lifts the bent tubing into a helix having the required pitch. The torque applied to the roller 30 is adjusted to an optimum condition in which there is substantially no deformation along the pitch-circle zone. In the described embodiment rollers, such as 34 and 36, are adjustable either by the engagement of a nut on a threaded shaft or by hydraulic rams. The torque may be applied to the roller 30 by an hydraulic motor or by a brake. In other embodiments a plurality of lengths of tubing may be coiled to produce multi-start coils or the tubing may be finned.
