Abstract
1339809 Rolling gears GLEASON WORKS 2 Sept 1971 [16 Nov 1970] 41044/71 Heading B3M A gear blank 12, Fig. 9, is roll-formed or rollfinished by a die 10, the die being fed relative to the blank by a pivotal motion about an axis 22 substantially coincident with a common normal to the axes 16 and 18 of the blank die. The blank and die are rotated about their axes during rolling. The pivotal feeding movement is effected by an hydraulic ram 82 which has a pair of forks 83 embracing a support 80 for the die. Each fork is guided between a fixed slide 85 and a pivoted slide 86 mounted on the support. The die 10, Fig. 10, is driven through gearing 60, 64, 92 and 94 from a driving shaft 95, and the blank 12 is driven in synchronism, through gearing 62, 74, 70 and 66, with the same shaft. The gear 66 can be arranged to move axially during rolling by means of an arm 96, so that the speed of the work does not quite match that of the die. This enables the helical infeed of the die to be controlled, and teeth having unbalanced profiles to be produced. The movement of the arm 96 is controlled by a rod pivoted to the arm and having a roller 102 at its end. The roller engages a spring-loaded wedge 98 which moves axially in response to rotation of a cam 100 of suitable profile. The die 10, Fig. 6, may be provided with shrouds 42 and 52 for limiting axial spread of the workpiece teeth during rolling. It is possible to feed the die axially in addition to its pivotal motion. Only one of the die or blank may be positively rotated, while the other is rotated frictionally or has a braking force applied to it.
