Abstract

957,722. Rolling; grooves and ribs. E. GROB. Aug. 5, 1960 [Aug. 5, 1959], No. 27284/60. Heading B3M. In a machine wherein at least one profiling roller 1, Fig. 3, is repeatedly brought into and out of engagement with a blank W to be profiled and wherein the work is fed axially, the roller 1 performs a planetary motion B, Fig. 2, in a plane extending through the axis of the work W the planetary motion B being the resultant of at least two separate motions B 1 , B 2 . The work is fed axially and also indexed by intermittent rotation during the period of disengagement of the roller 1 so that an adjacent groove may be formed on the next working cycle of the roller. Alternatively if the plane of the planetary motion is inclined at a suitable angle to the axis of the workpiece the latter may be continuously rotated resulting in the formation of spaced longitudinal ribs or grooves. The shape of the planetary path B allows profiles to be extended close to a shoulder on the work. The motions B 1 , B 2 are derived through linkages, from a driving shaft 6 which is synchronized with the rotation of the work. The motion B 1 is derived from the reciprocations of a slide 11 carrying the roller 1, the slide being attached through a universally-jointed rod 9 to an eccentric pin 7. The motion B 2 is derived from the oscillations of a slide 16 effected by an eccentric pin 8 through adjustable linkage 12, 13, 14, 15. The slide 11 is supported on the slide 16 and is angularly adjustable on the slide 16 to vary the angle of inclination of the plane of the planetary motion to the axis of the work. Alternatively the rollers 1 may be mounted in the slide 11 so that the spindles are always perpendicular to the work axis the work then rotating continuously and the rollers 1 being in the form of driven worms synchronized to perform one revolution during rotation of the work through the pitch of the grooves. The eccentric pins 7, 8 on the driving shaft 6 are adjustable radially and angularly to vary the form of the motion and the pivot 17 is provided with a screw adjustment for accommodating various diameters of work. In a modification, Fig. 4, a slide 16<SP>1</SP> is pressed towards the work with a predetermined maximum pressure by a closed hydraulic buffer system energized by the driven shaft 6, the motion B 2 being limited by adjustable stops 23 acting on the machine frame.
