Abstract

1447768 Making metal strip; extrusion; rolling BRITISH STEEL CORP 24 Jan 1974 [24 Jan 1973] 3596/73 Headings B3P B3A and B3M A metal strip 19 is produced from a cylindrical billet 11 by applying a localized deforming load to the billet as it is rotated to produce a plastic region 17 to which a member or roller 18 is applied to cause extrusion of the metal from the plastic region. The load is applied by a roller 14 which has back-up rollers 15 and a mechanical or hydraulic force applying screwdown. The member or roller 18 is adjustable so as to accommodate the reduction in the billet diameter. The billet is rotated by friction engagement with driven rollers on its circumference or end faces. The billet may be heated locally or generally. The strip 19 may be heat treated before coiling. Removal of the strip 19 from the cylinder may be assisted by tension.
