Abstract
1344066 Rolling mills DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 3 Aug 1971 [4 Aug 1970] 37658/70 Heading B3M A thin-walled cylindrical workpiece is provided with a flange adjacent one of its ends by applying a roll axially against the end, while restraining lateral spread of the end, the workpiece being locally heated before the working step. In one form, Fig. 1, a roll 4 is applied axially while rolls 6 and 8 limit lateral spread of the workpiece. An induction heater 2 heats an area of the workpiece before it reaches the working zone. The rolls can be mounted in the support 15 of a conventional vertical boring machine, and the workpiece be carried on a rotatable work-table. During deformation of the workpiece the roll is fed axially, and the roll 12 is moved axially away from the roll 6 in order to accommodate radial expansion of the flange. Movement of the roll 6 can be effected by a screw and nut assembly carried on the roll shaft (Fig. 2, not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 5, vertical rolls 60 and 62 limit spread of the workpiece caused by an axially applied horizontal roll 58. A ridge 64 on the roll 62 determines the axial extent of the flange. In place of the rolls 58 and 60, a single roll having a grooved periphery may be used. To form a flange spaced from the end of the workpiece, the arrangement shown in Fig. 7 may be employed. A grooved roll 76 is urged against the workpiece, causing a flange to form in the space 78 defined between a pair of rolls 70 and 72. In this arrangement the workpiece is resistively heated, using the three rollers as electrodes.
