Abstract

1,137,838. Rolling. ROTARY PROFILE ANSTALT. 25 March, 1966 [29 March, 1965], No. 13299/66. Heading B3M. An apparatus for profiling annular workpieces 36 comprises at least three parallel rollers, a mandrel 38 located between the rollers with its ends in rolling contact with at least two of the rollers and a control ring 52 engaging at least one of the other rolls. The apparatus preferably comprises thread rollers 10, 12, 14, the rollers 10, 14 being circumferentially recessed and the rollers 12, 14 being movable in the direction of arrows B, A to reduce the profiling space. The roller 10 is mounted on a fixed axle 18 and is driven by any suitable means. In operation the rollers 12, 14 are withdrawn and the workpiece, the mandrel and the control ring positioned between the rollers. The rollers 12, 14 are progressively moved inwards to profile the workpiece between the mandrel and the control ring. The mandrel has a central recessed portion which co-operates with the control ring 52 to form a profiling pass. Axial spread of the workpiece is prevented by the walls of the recess on the mandrel. An escape gap for excess metal is provided at one end of the profiling pass.
