MEANS FOR ROLLING WHEELS.
Speclilcation of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 5, 1910.
Application led April 26, 1909. Serial No. 492,098.
Wheels, of which the following is a speci' tication.
This invention relates to certain iin roveinents in machines for rolling whe s and particularly flanged car wheels. Heretofore 1n this type of -rolls the up er roll was of the saine width as the face o the wheel and consequently the parting was at each ed e of the periphery of the wheel forming a n at these points.
The object of this invention is to dispense with the iin at the periphery of the wheel and to increase the width of the peripheral roll making the partin0r between the rolls some distancel away from the periphery of the wheel blanln, rlhis places the tin at an unobjectionable point and gives clear ance between the wheels and each roll is inaterially strengthened.
The ligure in the accompanying drawin is a. diagrammatic sectional View througi the peripheral roll and the wheel blank, as shown by dotted lines.
A is the peripheral roll havinr a face a recessed ata to form the ange ot thewheel blank and a flange a2 at each side; the re` cesses between the flanges being of suilicieiit depth to locate the parting some distance 'back of the periphery of the wheel.
l5 and C are the two side rolls having faces l), o', and c, c respectively which bear against the wheel and with the peripheral roll A roperly Shape the riin d of the wheel D. T e rolls B and C also have bearing faces b2 and c respectively, which bear against the peripheral roll A and each roll B and C has an annular recess b, c, respectively, which allows clearance between the ianges a2 of the roll A and the rolls B andA C, and also allows for the free flow of any inetal displaced by the rolling operation and also for the free escape of scale.
In the present instance'the wheel blank is pro erly formed between dies in another iiiae iine and then introduced in the machine having the rolls, as set forth above; the rolls reducing the rim andange to the proper foi-in and giving `to the wheel its proper diameter.
I claim The combination in a machine for rolling wheels, of a grooved Aroll for rollin the periphery of a wheel, two inclined side earing rolls for rolling the inner surface of Vthe riin of the Wheel, each of said inclined rolls having two rollin surfaces, one at un angle to the other, a earing face resting against the side of theperipheral roll, and a, groove between the bearing face and the rolling surface so as to provide a clear space between the ed es of the peripheralroll and the inclined ro ls.
In testimony whereof, Il have signed my naine to this specification, in the presence of two suhseribin witnesses.
