Abstract
923,995. Swaging-machines. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Oct. 9, 1961 [March 13, 1961], No. 36163/61. Class 83 (4). A swaging-machine having opposed rotary dies which impinge on a workpiece mounted on a mandrel is characterized in that the mandrel comprises two tandem portions, one being axially rotatable relative to the other. A typical workpiece to be produced in a single operation (Fig. 3) has two tandem portions 32, 33, one having straight grooves 36 and the other having helical grooves 37. The mandrel (Fig. 4), which is mounted on a rod 42, comprises a first forming portion 46 carried on a shaft 45 which is rotatable in a bush 44, and a second forming portion 48 also rotatably mounted on the shaft 45. Swaging head.-A driven hub 16 carries four opposed dies 14 backed by a circle of rollers 17 having a stationary outer race 22 and an inner race comprising rings 23a, 23b, carried on the hub 16. Blanks contained in a slotted shoot 61 are released singly by a pin 65 actuated through linkage 64, by movement of a feed carriage 12. Also included (not shown) is a toggle linkage for stripping components from the mandrel when the feed carriage withdraws it from the dies. Die form.-In one arrangement of the diepieces, the forming portions corresponding to the two sections of the work are so spaced longitudinally that the maximum forming face of the first section has been passed before forming of the second section commences. A second arrangement of the die-pieces is such that forming of the first section is completed before commencement of the second section, thus avoiding possible bending movements on the mandrel due to any eccentricity.
