701,130. Making gilled tubes. AEROFIN CORPORATION. Sept. 28, 1951 [Oct. 12, 1950], No, 22687/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) Rolling; bending.-In a machine for applying a spiral fin to a tube, the fin is thinned on the outside by rolling and applied to a tube as it is rotated and moved axially. The tension on the fin is maintained uniform by allowing the tube advancing and rotating means to slip relatively to the tube and allowing the rate of stoppage to vary in proportion with the tension. A head 23 carries shaped spring-pressed rolls 85, 88 in pivoted counterweighted supports which are rotated in directions to feed and rotate with controlled slip the tube 24 by worm gearing within the head connected by a belt 29 to an electromotor 33. A shaft 47 rotated from a gearbox 46 has a tapered end 48 backed up by a roller 50 co-operating with a disc 49 on shaft 57 rotated by a chain 55 from the gearbox 46 to taper the fin on the outside by rolling. A shaft 53 is connected by a belt 59 to an electromotor 63 with clutch 61. The electromotor 33 drives the parts at low speed at the start of the cooling and the electromotor 63 completes the operation at high speed. The top of the fin may be straightened by spaced disc 92, 93 with corrugated opposing-surfaces rotated: by a belt 42 at such a speed to iron out any waves formed in the fin. In a modification, Fig. 16 (not shown) the machine may be used for flattening wire and winding it on a tube to form a low fin.
