Abstract

An apparatus for making helically seamed tubes without internal support comprises feed rollers to feed a flanged strip 2 to at least three mutually spaced rolling devices 4, 5, 6 which progressively interengage the flanges to form the seam. The feed rollers may also form the flange on each edge of the strip. The devices 4, 5, 6 are equally spaced around the formed tube and are all driven at the same speed to feed the strip and tube axially. The devices are adjustable axially for different strip widths and radially for different tube sizes. The lower device 4 is preferably fixed and the devices 5, 6 each mounted on slides (10), Fig. 6 (not shown), which can each be moved on guide-rods (13) by a threaded shaft (11). The shafts (11) are interconnected by a common drive-shaft (12). The rollers of the devices are driven by chain and sprocket means. The relative positions of the devices can be altered during seaming to produce tapered or varying size tubes. The formed tube may be supported on rollers.
