Abstract

1,222,218. Bending tubes. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 14 March, 1968 [21 March, 1967], No. 12464/68. Heading B3E. A tube is cold bent by simultaneously keeping the inner surface of the outside of the bend at its initial length and compressing the inside of the bend. A tube 6 e.g. Ti, Zr is first filled with a Bi, Sn, Cd alloy which expands on solidifying, metal wires having a higher tensile strength than the tube 6 being embedded in the alloy adjacent the tube wall which is to form the outside of the bend. The tube 6 is reciprocated between driven rollers 1, 10, during which movement a carriage 25 is moved by a screw 27 or an hydraulic jack to cause rollers 19, 20 mounted thereon to bend the tube over the driving roller 1. The tube wall on the inside of the bend is caused to be compressed and thickened whilst the opposite wall portion is kept at its initial length.
