Abstract
951,041. Tube bender. FMC. CORPORATION. Dec. 6, 1962 [Dec. 18, 1961], No. 46063/62. Heading B3E. A tube bending machine comprises first and second dies rotatable about a common axis and, by means of an hydraulic cylinder, relatively movable along said axis towards and away from one another, the dies being shaped to cooperate in forming a tube-receiving die cavity, when the dies are adjacent one another, and to grip a length of tube therebetween, means for rotating said dies about said axis to bend said length of tube, and a mandrel arranged to project into said tube to prevent collapsing of the tube wall. A length of tubing W to be bent is placed in a die cavity 28 formed on the upper surface of a lower die D rotatable about a vertical axis in the machine frame 10. The cavity 28 is of quarter-round section for about 90 degrees around the axis of rotation of the die, opening into a part of semicircular section, a socket cavity 29 of which engages the expanded head part 30a of the tube W. An upper die E formed on its lower face with a cavity 28a similar to the cavity 28 is then moved down, on guide rods 32 extending from the lower die D, by an hydraulic cylinder F carried at the upper ends of the rods 32. The end of the tube W is thus gripped between the dies D and E. A mandrel M is then moved part way into the tube W by an hydraulic cylinder G. A pusher P, coaxial with the mandrel M, is then advanced by an hydraulic cylinder H to engage the end of the tube W and start its bending. As the resistance to bending increases, pressure fluid is directed to an hydraulic cylinder C which pulls a chain 49 passing round a sprocket 26 on the die D, thus assisting the pusher P to rotate the dies. A spring S serves to return the dies.
