Abstract

1,035,812. Converting circular section tubing to polygonal section. E. JENSEN. Jan. 18, 1962 [Jan. 26, 1962; Oct. 25, 1962], Nos. 3129/62 and 40464/62. Headings B3A, B3E and B3J. A method of converting circular section sheet metal tubing into rectangular or polygonal section tubing comprises locating the tubing with an easy fit along forming means extending the length of the tubing and changing the profile of said forming means uniformly throughout the length of the tubing so as to deform the tubing into the desired non-circular cross-section by inwardly applied pressure of the forming means to the tubing, restoring the forming means to its tube-receiving condition and retracting the tubing and forming means one relative to the other. A length 24 of helical lock seam tubing of circular crosssection is supported on a carriage 25 between side walls 26, 27. The wall 27 is then moved by hydraulic jacks towards the wall 26 to deform the tube 24 to oval cross-section. The carriage 25 is then moved along rails 30 to place the tube over a tube deforming mandrel extending from a housing 2. The deforming means includes a series of wedge members 6, Fig. 6 (not shown), held by and between side bars 4a, 4b, and engaging inclined parts 7a, 8a of upper and lower formers 7, 8 so that on axial retraction, by hydraulic means, of the members 6, 4a and 4b the formers are moved apart to deform the tube to an approximately rectangular shape. Continued axial movement of the member 4a, 4b causes a plate 4c thereon to engage and move axially auxiliary mandrels 15, 16 carried by the upper and lower formers 7, 8. This causes bars 17, 18 of the formers to be displaced laterally to form the tube to rectangular section. Instead of the carriage 25 an overhead gantry may be used. Oval sectioned tubing may be formed by fitting the formers 7, 8 with detachable heads 13, Fig. 5A (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 13 (not shown), the outward movement of the formers 7, 8 is effected by links 31 connected to an axially moved mandrel 4. In another modification, Fig. 14 (not shown), the former 7 is moved away from the former 8 by hydraulic jacks 32 and the plate 4c moved axially by an hydraulic jack 35.
