Abstract
1424979 Bending metal CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 3 June 1974 [13 July 1973] 24449/74 Heading B3E A workpiece is formed progressively from one end to the other between opposed dies one 28 of which presents a corrugated face, Fig. 4, while the other consists of a plurality of members 42, 44, 43 successively forced into engagement with the workpiece by a wedge member 57. The members 42, 44, 43, have bevelled upper ends 49 and are loosely supported on rods 51 mounted in frames 36 which depend from an upper platen 24 so as to leave a way for advance of the wedge member 57. The lower die is mounted on a lower platen 22, Fig. 1, the upper platen being mounted on the rod 18 of a ram 17 and sliding on guides 23. A ram 62 mounted on the upper platen reciprocates the wedge member 57 and is connected in the same hydraulic circuit as ram 17. A spacer block 26 adjustable by shims 27 is located between the platens. When pressure fluid is admitted to conduit 74, the ram extends readily, producing lower pressure in the conduit, until platen 24 abuts spacer 26, the die members then being in light contact with the workpiece. The pressure then builds up in conduit 74, which operates a sequencing valve 82 to admit pressure to conduit 78, operating ram 62 to effect the corrugation progressively. When pressure fluid is admitted to conduit 76, it first retracts ram 62 at low pressure, and then causes ram 17 to raise platen 24 until a microswitch (not shown) is operated to remove all fluid pressure and set an hydraulic lock on the rams.
