1383857 Bending metal R BOCK 30 Aug 1972 [14 Sept 1971] 40174/72 Heading B3E Apparatus for bending steel reinforcing mats comprises a fixed beam having a surface for receiving the mat and hook-like mat-holding devices at spaced intervals above the surface, and a swivelable bending beam having a swivel axis parallel to the surface and hook-like bending members engageable in a mat held on the surface. In Fig. 3, the fixed beam 12 is shown in section, and the holding devices comprise elements 14 extending parallel to the beam from mounting parts 140 in the beam, so that rods 27 of the mat 27, 28, can be engaged under elements 14. The mat can be held down by a member 30 within the beam having slanting cams 31 engaging slanting slots 141 in the mounting parts 140, the member 30 being slidable along the beam by an hydraulic piston and cylinder. The bending beam 15 is swivelable about axis 21, and supports bending elements 22 extending parallel to axis 21 and located each in the same transverse plane as a holding element 14 so as to be engageable with rods 27. The beam may be swivelled by a mechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic drive, the final element of which may be a rack and pinion. The bending elements 22 may be engaged above the rods 27, to bend the mat around a fixed semicylindrical former 25, as shown at 27<SP>11</SP>, or may be located below the rods, and bend the mat about the holding elements 14, and such bending may occur on either side of the beam 12. In another embodiment, the swivel axis 21 is located to one side of beam 12. In a third embodiment, Fig. 9, the bending beam 152 is cylindrical, and is mounted by arms 43 and collars 44 to swing about the cylindrical fixed beam 40. The latter supports fixed axially extending elements 45, 47, 48, on which formers 50, 50<SP>1</SP> of different size may be located, for bending the mat about any of the fixed elements. The bending elements 41 are supported on collars 151 surrounding beam 152, and are angularly adjustable as at 41, 41<SP>1</SP> to positions suitable for co-operating with different size formers 50, 50<SP>1</SP>. The bending and holding elements may be rollers.
