Abstract

1,247,988. I.C. engine induction passages. FIAT SpA. July 25, 1969 [Aug. 1, 1968], No.37536/69. Heading F1B. In an I. C. engine having an even number of cylinders the induction manifold comprises two symmetrical manifold sections connected to equal numbers of cylinders, the free ends of the sections remote from the cylinders being inter-connected without a break in continuity other than a central air supply inlet which is disposed at the junction inter-connection of the manifold sections at a point corresponding to a pressure node therein, whereby the manifolds form a half wave resonant standing wave system when the engine speed corresponds to maximum power output. A six cylinder engine has the respective inlet manifold sections (2, 3, 4) and (5, 6, 7) Fig. 1 (not shown) of each set of three cylinders (A, B, C) and (D, E, F) connected to inlet pipe sections (8, 9) which are joined together at their junction with an air supply inlet (10). In another embodiment the manifold sections are formed from a single length of tube having a central divider 20, Fig. 5. A sealing plug 23 divides the cylinders and the air inlet 10 is located at the junctions of the tubes 18, 19. In a further embodiment a pipe (24), Fig. 6 (not shown) is arranged non-coaxially in an external pipe (26).
