Abstract
1,242,462. Ion pumps. THOMSON-CSF. 8 April, 1969 [11 April, 1968], No. 18003/69. Heading HID. A Penning-type ion pump has an auxiliary starting anode 5 capable of operating at a higher temperature than the main anode(s). The main anodes and cathodes (not shown) are located in the field M of magnet pole pieces 2 and 3 and may comprise a system of flat parallel plates which may be apertured. In the arrangement shown the auxiliary anode 5 is a sphere and an auxiliary cathode is formed by an annular portion 6 of the envelope 11, which portion or the whole of the envelope is made of Ti so that the starting electrodes also perform a pumping action. The auxiliary anode 5 is made of Ta or Mo while the main anodes are made of stainless steel or Ti. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 5, not shown) an auxiliary rod anode is located axially in a cylindrical appendage to the main envelope 11, which appendage is surrounded by toroidal magnets and acts as an auxiliary cathode.
