Abstract

1,239,540. Positive clutches. OVERLOAD DEVICES Ltd. 13 June, 1970, No. 28725/70. Heading F2C. An overload release clutch comprises balls 7 in recesses 6 in one member 1 and radial bores 8 in the other member 3, the balls being urged radially into the recesses by a thrust ring 11 urged by a spring 12 and carrying a lip 16 to limit the absolute withdrawal of the balls radially on overload, and the balls being held in the disengaged position, after overload, by the thrust ring 11 which holds the balls frictionally against the side of the bores 8 which are formed partially in a shoulder 9 on the member 3. The spring 12 may be replaced by a number of Belleville springs, and may be adjusted by a ring-nut 13. The recesses 6 may extend completely through the member 1. Again, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the lip 16 may be formed on a separate sleeve (17) which includes a ramp surface (21) to facilitate re-engaging the clutch by axially sliding the sleeve on the thrust ring 11 and wing nut 13. Disengaging movement of the thrust ring may actuate a switch to energize a warning light and/or an audible alarm and/or to switch off the input drive.
