Abstract

1,185,007. Overload release clutches. ERIC VAWSER & CO. Ltd. 1 Jan., 1969, No. 54/69. Heading F2C. An overload release clutch comprises pins 11 radially slidable in a driven (or driving) sleeve 7 and having tapered ends 10 urged into engagement with corresponding recesses 8 in a driving (or driven) shaft 1 by spring pressed balls or rollers 13 engaging inclined surfaces 14 on the pins 11. On overload the inclined recesses 8 force the pins 11 radially outward to disengage the clutch. During radial outward movement of the pins 11 the balls 13 ride off the inclined surfaces 14 on to adjacent radial surfaces of the pin whereupon the clutch remains disengaged until manually reset. Projections 22 on the pins 11 engage an end plate 21 to limit radial outward movement of the pins 11. The spring loading of the balls 13 may be adjusted by a nut 18. The pins 11 may be held in engagement with the recesses 8 by an electromagnet during starting. The radially outward movement of the pins 11 during clutch disengagement may operate a warning light or alarm switch. The helical compression spring 15 may be replaced by Belleville springs. The sleeve 7 may be provided with an outer sleeve radially spaced from the ends of the pins 11 and carrying radial screws aligned with the pins 11 to reset the clutch.
