Abstract

1535088 Clutch release bearings SKF INDUSTRIAL TRADING & DEVELOPMENT CO BV 13 April 1976 [31 May 1975] 15102/76 Heading F2L In a clutch release bearing assembly the initial axial movement of a housing 7 causes a pawl 5 and ratchet 28 mechanism to engage and the housing then moves the release bearing 3 to disengage the clutch. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 each of a plurality of ratchet elements 28 is biased to engage pawl 5 by an annular spring 33, a ratchet element 28 pivoting about an end held on a sliding sleeve 25 by a spring 30. When the clutch is engaged, the condition shown, a portion 31 of each ratchet element engages part of a sheet metal ring 19 to hold the pawl and ratchet disengaged, the sheet metal ring being biased axially by a spring 17 against an axially fixed abutment (a bolt 22). In an alternative embodiment each ratchet element has a radially inwardly extending portion which engages a surface of the guide sleeve when the housing and sliding sleeve are moved to engage the pawl and ratchet (Fig. 2, not shown). The release bearing has radial movement relative to pawl 5 for selfcentring. The pawl member may engage ratchet elements with its exterior rather than as shown.
