Abstract

1,238,206. Modifying aluminium surfaces prior to electroless plating. SHIPLEY CO. Inc. Oct. 4, 1968 [Oct. 16, 1967; Dec. 18, 1967], No. 47124/ 68. Headings C7F and C7U. An aluminium alloy containing at least 0À1% silicon is contacted with a solution containing a halogen ion other than fluoride ion, and one or both of a hydrogen ion or oxidizing agent prior to a metal plating process. The halide ion can be derived from hydrochloric, hydrobromic or hydroiodic acids or salts of these acids e.g. beryllium chloride, ammonium chloride, aluminium bromide, sodium chloride, bromide or iodide, potassium chloride and bromide, magnesium chloride and bromide, calcium bromide and iodide or lithium chloride. The solvent may be water, formamide, alcohols, glycols or ketones. The solution may also contain sulphuric, citric, phosphonic, acetic or sulphonic acids, or oxidizing agents such as ferric ion, ceric ion, permanganate, peroxide or chromate. Organic inhibitors, several of which are specifically referred to may also be added. The plating metal may be Fe, steel, brass, Cu, Ag, Au and Ni. An electroless Ni bath may contain: - nickel sulphate 40 gms., citric acid 30 gms., Na hypophosphite 40 gms., acetic acid 10 ml., ammonium hydroxide to pH 4À8.
