Abstract

1482747 Chromium electro-plating BNF METALS TECHNOLOGY CENTRE 10 Oct 1974 [10 Oct 1973] 47424/73 Heading C7B An aqueous Cr electro-plating bath contains trivalent Cr ions e.g. 0À1 to 2 molar, and at least 0À08 e.g. 0À2 to 2 molar H 2 PO 2 ions. Preferably the molar ratio of trivalent Cr to H 2 PO 2 is 0À4 to 1À7. The source of Cr ions may be chromic halide preferably chloride and/or sulphate, or P oxy acid salt, organic acid salt or complex with other anions, or formed in situ by action of HCl, H 2 SO 4 or H 3 PO 4 on Cr, its oxide, Cr 2 O 3 , or hydroxide or reduction of CrO 3 by H 2 O 2 . The source of H 2 PO 2 ion may be NaH 2 PO 2 , H 2 O or hypophosphorous acid. With CrCl 3 , an organic buffer, e.g. 10 to 25% by volume dimethylformamide, may be added to the bath. The bath may also contain at least 0À2 molar ammonium ions e.g. added as halide or sulphate; 0À5 to 1 molar boric acid, borate or fluoborate; 5 to 50 ppm of a cationic, anionic, non- ionic or amphoteric surfactant, e.g. cetyl trimethylammonium bromide, substituted imidazolines, Na lauryl sulphate, sulphonated castor oils, higher fatty alcohols, ethers, epoxides and amino acids; di-n-pentyl or butyl phthalate, for alloys, in saturated solution; 0À02 to 2À5 molar Fe and/or 0À02 to 1À0 molar Ni. Other ions present in the bath may be NO 3 , NO 2 , F, Br, I, alkali metal e.g. Na or alkali earth metal, e.g. Ca. The pH may be adjusted e.g. to 1À5 - 4À0 by acid, NaOH or NH 3 addition. For hard deposits the bath preferably contains Al 2 O 3 , Y 2 O 3 , ZrB 2 , MoS 2 or WC particles of maximum average diameter 5 microns or whiskers 300 to 600 microns long and up to 100 microns diameter. The anode is preferably of magnetite, coated steel, Pt or platinized Ti for a sulphate bath, or of carbon e.g. graphite for halide or mixed halide/sulphate bath; or may be of Cr or corresponding Cr-Fe and/or Ni alloy. Prior to electro-plating with Cr, particularly overbrightened Ni layers, the substrate may be cathodically treated in NaCn solution and rinsing. The substrate may be of Fe, steel, Ni, Cu, Zn, Al or brass.
